C. Richard Bowers, Jr., M.D., a board certified ophthalmologist, is one of the founding members of Bluegrass Eyecare Center and has been in private practice in Lexington since completing his ophthalmology residency at Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana. He specializes in cataract surgery and LASIK surgery and has a large general ophthalmology practice where he treats glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, cataracts, ocular injuries, and infections. Besides doing eye surgery, he also does comprehensive medical eye examinations.
Born in Texas and raised in Indiana, Dr. Bowers studied at Princeton University and DePauw University and received an undergraduate BA degree, Cum Laude, from DePauw University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. While at DePauw University, he was selected to the Academic All-American Basketball Team. He received his medical degree (M.D.) from Indiana University, completed a surgical internship at the University of New Mexico, and completed his ophthalmology residency at Indiana University in Indianapolis. Dr. Bowers has performed thousands of cataract surgeries since arriving in Lexington and began LASIK surgery in 1996.
Providing total eye care and specializing in eye surgery, Dr. Bowers is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has served as president of both the Kentucky Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and the Lexington Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He is also a member of the Lexington Medical Society.
